Mental health is certainly a new public health issue, but it’s less of a cut and dry reality than a mindset of our societies in which individual subjectivity has become the object of extensive social and political attention. This is the new situation that one has to understand above and beyond statistical facts or sociological laments. My approach is to consider mental health as a transversal grid of reading dilemmas and tensions of contemporary democratic society. And my hypothesis is that mental health pertains to the generalization of values of autonomy to the whole of social life, that is the anchoring in daily life of a double ideal of personal accomplishment and individual initiative. These two ideals bring out a personal aspect in every social relationship.
