in English In his lecture, Prof. Bauman describes the background of cultural and social movements during Freud's time and compares them with current developments in our civilization. He discusses the effects of these developments on individuals and social systems, such as families. Bauman identifies the transition from “solid modernity” to “liquid modernity” and attempts to substantiate this with social scientific and philosophical findings from postmodernism and to highlight its psychological consequences. A key feature of this transition is the gain in personal freedoms at the expense of increasing uncertainty, insecurity, and unsafety, which is experienced by individuals as a constant and latent threat. Social systems, such as families, have lost their binding force. Bonds are sought in other social spaces provided by postmodern consumer society.
