Reflections on the state-of-science of hypnosis (engl.)

Mark P. Jensen

This talk will summarize the presenter's thoughts regarding the tremendous progress that has been made in our understanding of the efficacy and mechanisms of clinical hypnosis in the 40 years since M.E.G. was founded. This progress has occurred in three key areas: understanding the beneficial effects (addressing the question: Does it work?) of hypnosis, understanding the mediators of hypnosis (addressing the question: How does it work?), and understanding the moderators of hypnosis (addressing the question: For whom does it work?). As of the end of 1984, there were very few clinical trials published on the efficacy of hypnosis and they were of very low methodological quality. Since then there has been a steady increase in the number and scientific rigor of clinical trials, and this progress has continued to increase each year. We now have strong evidence regarding the efficacy of hypnosis for managing irritable bowel syndrome, depression, and both actuate and chronic pain conditions...

Brain oscillations and hypnosis

Mark P. Jensen

Empirical findings and treatment implications This 20-minute talk will present the empirical findings from Professor Jensen's research program studying the brain mechanisms (specifically, brain oscillations, as measured by electroencephalogram) that underlie the beneficial effects of hypnosis and hypnotic treatment. The talk will end with a discussion of clinical implications of the findings for enhancing response to hypnotic suggestions.

Hypnotic Management of Pain: (Part II)

Mark P. Jensen

This 3-hour workshop is intended as the second of two workshops co-facilitated by Drs. Jensen and Patterson. The goals of the workshops are to provide participants with an overview of hypnotic strategies and suggestions for helping individuals better manage acute and chronic pain conditions. This first workshop will begin with a discussion of the neurophysiology of nociception and pain, focusing on nine specific processes and physiological structures involved in pain perception, and that can be influenced by hypnotic suggestions. We now understand that there is no single focal "center" in the brain responsible for the experience of pain. Rather, pain is the end product of a number of integrated cortical networks that involve activity at multiple sites...
