Analyses of clinical trial data, including unpublished data hidden by the drug companies, reveal that most (if not all) of the benefits of antidepressants are due to the placebo effect. The mean difference between drug and placebo is not detectible by clinicians, and even for those who are severely depressed, the benefit of antidepressants of placebo is well below what clinicians see as minimal improvement. Other treatments (e.g. psychotherapy and physical exercise) produce the same short term benefits as antidepressants, show better long term effectiveness, and do so without the side effects and health risks of the drugs.
