Ego State Therapy (EST) for posttraumatic stress disorder is now evidence based treatment. One of two recent fully controlled studies from the Washington State University Hypnosis Laboratory is presented. Using the EST for PTSD manual (Barabasz, Christensen, Barabasz & Watkins (2010), 40 patients meeting diagnostic criteria for PSTD were exposed to 5-6 hours of continuous EST co-therapy or to an active placebo control condition. All were pre-tested using clinician administered PTSD scale (CAPS), the Davidson Trauma Scale, the Beck Depression Inventory II and Beck Anxiety Scale II. Follow-ups used all but the CAPS scales and were completed immediately after therapy, at one month, three months and six months. EST was significantly more effective than the active treatment control condition. The active treatment control failed to show improvements in PTSD symptoms.
