Despite person-centered therapy's naturalistic adherence to organismic experience, it was a receptacle for second-hand metaphysics from the outset. This is evident in some of its formulations - e.g., in the concept of formative tendency. This tendency, “demonstrated in interstellar space as well as in crystals and microorganisms, in more complex organic life, and in human beings” (Rogers, 1980a, 2007, p. 83), is a teleological model of organic development. According to this model, there is a fundamental order that ultimately leads every development to a good end. As with any second-hand metaphysics, the formative tendency is a shadow of God, the powerful Other who will appear in some guise to save us. This model is the basis for “hope”; it manifests itself through the anthropocentric attribution that there is meaning in life and benevolent intentions behind the passage of time.
