Ulrike Halsband: Plasticity changes in the brain in hypnosis and meditation

Brain plasticity changes in hypnosis and meditation were investigated using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), positron emission tomography (PET), and electroencephalography (EEG).
Visual illusion in hypnosis was  studied with fMRI and data were analysed with Granger Causality Mapping. Results indicate changes in the effective connectivity relations of fusiform gyrus, anterior cingulate cortex and intraparietal sulcus.
PET was used to look at cerebral activation patterns associated with verbal memory processing of high-imagery words under hypnosis and in the waking state. Learning of high-imagery words in hypnotic trance was associated with (i) more pronounced bilateral activation in the occipital cortex and prefrontal areas and (ii) an improved memory performance.
